THE INSTAGRAM-LESS DADDY
Life is one big visual these days. And where are all the dads? Well, by choice, probably at work or on the golf course, or the tractor, or some waves. He’s not on the gram most likely. But he’s alive and well. And here’s the deal. Father’s day is about one thing and one thing only. Honoring fathers. It’s not about anything else, or any other hashtag you may see. It’s about the men in your life that have helped shape you, grow you, mentor you, protect you and raise you. It’s also about the men who you chose to do life with. Who had children with you. Who spent many sleepless nights with you while you couldn’t get a colicky baby to go to sleep. He’s wonderful on multiple levels. MULTIPLE. And he’s also absent from social media 90% of the time. But he’s there. And this is his day.
There’s one thing that I know a father would love on fathers day. Time. Yes we can throw you a few ideas (see a couple of mine below) and that’s all well and good. Everyone likes a nice gift. But also, let’s not forget the real value in time. Taking time to let them know you care. To let them know how appreciative you are. And truly, how you love them, unconditionally.
And here’s why.
Men seem to be the ones who crave actions. They probably don’t pine for affection, and probably not many gifts either. But they do crave quality time and the doing. The setting up of dinner. The walk to the golf shop to get fitted for new clubs. The action of a real outing to a baseball game and a good old hot dog on a Sunday afternoon.
From my observation, father’s day is more of that, and less of stuff they can return. Of course everyone is different and no man will ever say no to a premium Yeti. Or a grill. Or a new pair of wireless headphones. Or a gym bag to replace his old one from college.
But this year contemplate the value of time. My Dad is in Hawaii at the moment so I won’t get to be next to him on Father’s day. And because I moved away from California, it’s far and few between that we spend this important day together at all. And that makes me cry sometimes.
I wish we lived closer. But I know I’ll be carving out some quality time to FaceTime him and remind him of my gratitude, for a glorious life with him as my father. No doubt about that.
