WHY YOU DON’T BUY EVERYTHING ON SALE
Don’t let the caption fool you. I love a sale. Y’all know me. But it took me some time in my twenties to figure out that just because it’s on sale, doesn’t mean you buy it. Ever look in your closet and realize you still have tags on a sundress you swore you needed because it was on sale for $89 from $200 and it was a steal? Yet, you didn’t love it on you. You liked it. You wanted to love it. But you didn’t. This is why you don’t buy everything on sale. But when you fall in love and it’s the real thing, hands down, you say “I do.” And here’s why.
Again, don’t let the caption fool you. My leopard shorts were a literal walk buy in Nordstrom rack. I saw, I liked”, I tried on, I bought. They were $20. My sneakers, same situation while browsing Barneys on vacay in San Fran, but definitely not $20. More like a few hundred more than $20. Yes, I know, crazy. But they happen to be the only pair of shoes I’ve purchased in 10 months. So to me, it’s logical. And I wear them almost every day. This is how I have always thought about fashion and budget. And here’s what I’ve learned and why.
LOVE IT, BUY IT
Life is too short to pass on something you truly love. Unless of course it’s entirely out of your budget, then no. But if you love something, like, feel amazing and beautiful in it, and it makes you happy, then purchase it. If you don’t, do NOT. You’d be amazed at how many things you pass on when you really ask yourself if you’ll wear it and if you love it. Like Marie Kondo says, '“if it doesn’t bring you joy”, toss it. If it brings you joy, keep it. Or in my case the other day in Chicago, I tried on a cashmere sweater that was pricey and on sale, but I fell in love. I’ve purchased two sweaters in two years. So this made sense. Plus, when you’re in love, it’s a done deal.
TRENDY ISN’T ALWAYS TIMELY
Even if it’s cheap or on sale, trends aren’t always the right fit for everyone. Just because it’s animal print season, doesn’t mean you must have animal print. If you find something you love in an animal print, buy it. If you find something and it slightly works but you doubt you’d ever wear it to dinner with your friends, put it back on the rack. Period.
PRICEY DOESN’T MEAN PERFECT
Here’s the thing. Not everything that is expensive is perfect. Some brands have put out beautiful pieces and some other brands knock it off and it works. It all depends on how it makes you feel. Just because it’s $500 doesn’t mean you look prettier in it, than something that’s $80. You decide how it makes you feel. If you feel pretty and it makes you happy, purchase.
I FEEL PRETTY
I remember in my twenties, I was engaged for the first time (yes engaged twice and runaway bride twice) and I tried on a $13,000. 00 wedding gown in Beverly Hills. It was literally the most stunning dress I had ever tried on in my life. I had money saved in the bank and I was willing to throw it all down on a dress. Good thing I had the intuition in my gut that I couldn’t get married to the guy. But when I actually did get married (to the right guy) and I tried on my dress, not only did I feel pretty and cry and know it was the one, I didn’t blink at the price. It made me feel so beautiful and gave me all the joy. Luckily it was on sale. :)
Sometimes clothes can be an emotional decision or impulsive. Next time you shop, simply ask yourself if you love it and if it makes you happy and feel pretty. If the answer is yes, buy it. You only live once.
