PROJECT BEACH BUNGALOW (PART TWO)
Can it be summer already? Here we are. It’s winter and gloomy in Nashville and all I want to do is transport myself to our Project Beach Bungalow. Because it’s lovely and because well, it’s the beach. And because it’s done! Previously on last week’s post, I mentioned our labor of love was finished. Well, it is for now. Is there more to do? Yes. Always yes. But we did what we could do on our budget to get it ready for renters (and also us) and we are pretty thrilled with the results. And here’s the deets.
Renovating is good fun. For someone like me. But of course you have to figure in hiccups of life: budget, delays, contract work that isn’t perfect (that you have to bug them to fix) and a whole other slew of things. Well, all things considered, we pulled it off, but not without being clever in every aspect including design, styling, and products to choose.
THE RENO
The house has great bones. So we let it sit tight. We didn’t take down walls, or ceilings. We started with the removal of things we didn’t want to keep to open up the space, ie: an old bar cabinet on wall and floor in living room and lots of shelving. Shelving was everywhere. Everywhere. I had it all removed. I wanted a clean slate and clean walls and lots of white paint everywhere (SW pure white) to have a serene canvas to begin with. We also laid new floors on top of the old to create a lighter, brighter feel to the bungalow, not to mention a durable product for the beach. (See before and after below).
ON FURNITURE SELECTION
We went with custom sofas and swivels so we could have durable fabric for beach life, but also for renters. I also sourced (last minute) our coffee table because the vendor I worked with for furniture said our coffee table would cost $2000. So I found it at a better price point and all was right in the world. (See link above). For shades we partnered with Somfy and the automatic woven shade was the perfect choice. Add a few details from Cb2, world market, target and a few local stores and styling was done. Bear in mind, we had budget for this project so we didn’t demo the entire house and completely furnish it, but like any project that needs an update, paint and new white linens definitely go a long way and make a huge impact.
ON FUNCTION
The bunk room design was fun. This room was fine before, but it needed a little pick me up and also needed to function well for our family. I designed floating queen over queen bunks to accommodate our kiddos and also renters and their kiddos. But to be honest, I’m just excited for slumber parties with besties in there.
BEACH HOUSE STYLE
Everything from sisal rugs in the bungalow and ocean photography (shot by my close friend and mega musician producer Nathan Chapman) to woven baskets to pillows and faux plants and feathers and starfish aplenty, we achieved that coastal relaxed living where everyone can be comfortable. But more importantly, an inviting place where no one is afraid of a little sand. It’s the beach after all and if you don’t actually have sand on your feet, were you even really there?
