WHY A MOTHER'S TOUCH CAN ACTUALLY CHANGE THE WORLD

WHY A MOTHER'S TOUCH CAN ACTUALLY CHANGE THE WORLD

I've always believed that we can change the world. Sometimes people laugh. Sometimes people agree.

I believe. And I believe a mother's touch can actually change the world and here's why.

It's the instant calm after the storm. The screaming toddler bloody lip aftermath is terrible until his mother holds him tight. Rubs his head and breathes into his ear, "You're ok, momma's got you." It's the screaming infant who doesn't know life and yet, hearing her mothers heart and drinking milk from her chest is instant calm. She feels safe. It's the dramatic exhausted flailing child who can't find the ground and when her mother says let me hold you, the tears subside and the hot body instantly cools down. It's the tears of a grown son losing his father and the arms of his mother are the explanation to the questions of why.

I don't know if you've experienced it, or if you are currently and you can feel the dramatic almost seismic shift that happens when a mother holds her child. Like the two earth plates come together and create steady ground. Like the ocean becomes still and calm and guides you home.

It's hard to not imagine a child feeling what we feel when we feel it. Because it is that dramatic, and important and almost strategic. And it's because of the single touch of a mother.

Mothering encompasses so much. We know this, but imagine if every child around the globe knew this kind of state of mind. Imagine if they felt this kind of comfort in a mother/mother figure. Safety in her arms. Belief that we will all be ok. Imagine if every child was told to their ear, "everything will be ok. Momma's here."

What kind of world would that be?

In a time and place where our answers can't be met on why innocent people die everyday or why tragedy strikes when it does, and where and why does hatred exist, I wonder if there is truth to the simple and magical healing touch of a mothers love to a child. And if there is magic within that, how can we spread it like wildfire? How can we cultivate handing it out one by one to create love and change throughout the world?

People laugh when people say "we can change the world", because I think people see the world as this huge universe that we simply can't undo. It's too big to create real change. Well, I disagree. Totally and completely. And if we, start, one by one, noticing how incredible our work is as mothers and we create the change by loving our children and holding them dear, teaching every child they are loved and they (the children) repeat those patterns with their children, then indeed we are changing the world, one mother at a time. Imagine that.
