THE DAY YOU BECOME A MOTHER

THE DAY YOU BECOME A MOTHER

You might be a mother. Or you might be preparing to be a mother.  Either way you're there or you're very close. And although every story is different, built from beautiful diverse love stories and or unusual circumstance, the intertwined common thread we all share here, is the day you become a mother is unlike any other day you will ever have in your lifetime. And it's inexplicable. You can't write the right words. They don't run off your tongue like a prosed poet. You're baffled, confused and short of breath. Because it doesn't make sense how a tiny innocent child can make all your dreams come true. But, yet she does. And here's why.

It's July. And 90 degrees. And humid. And the extra 30-40 pounds you're carrying on your miraculous body probably feels enormously heavy. Like elephant status. And you're ready. Ready to become a mother. A little anxious. A little frightened. But confident. I don’t know what it is that happens to a woman the moment before she gives birth, but it's astounding. It's the reason why it does all makes sense. I know. I've been there. In fact, 6 years ago, this morning.

You see, that moment, is your life. You freeze. And in that exact moment, you take inventory of everything around you. And you smell the stale air and see the bright lights around every corner of that birthing room. And you acknowledge the responsibility you are about to give birth to. And it’s intoxicating. The moments leading up to that exact minute you see her face is riveting. Your heart is pounding. Your mind is racing. Did we get the car seat in correctly? Will there be any complications? Will she be ok? What if something happens to me? What does she look like? And suddenly the moment is here and you look up. And every single dream you’ve ever dreamt is in front of you. And she’s real. And she’s yours.

The day I became a mother, everything changed. I saw her and my world opened up, like the earth plates shifted and I watched the cracks move an inch with my own eyes. The sun seeped through the window and a child was born. So was a mother. A woman who, for most of her life, wondered if life was seen. If it was fully acknowledged, represented and felt through her finger tips like newly planted soil. And when she looked into my eyes, I saw it all. Every single thing.

She made me a mother. And forever I will carry that badge of motherhood proudly. And never doubt my reason. She is my reason. She made me a mother. And there will never be anything more important. Never. Happy birthday to my first born. And thank you for making me a mother. And to those of you who are about to become mothers, prepare for your heart to explode in the most profound way.
